Dear Editor:

The article about property taxes, (in the June 4 edition of the Observer) is disingenuous at best. No, the state doesn't get any revenue from property taxes. Property taxes are the main source of revenue at the county and city level. The money collected goes to fund the everyday services that we all depend on.

Getting rid of property taxes is an appealing idea, on the surface.  How exactly are our county/city going to replace that income? What other taxes will have to be levied on the citizens to make up for the loss of the revenue? As it is we have budget shortfalls.

The proponents have yet to provide a factual explanation for how that income will be replaced. The governor says he will create a fund to help counties and cities affected by this. Where is the money for that "fund" going to come from. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that help.
