2:45 p.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach
Fraud. An 82-year-old Ormond Beach man was scammed out of $14,000 after two men asked for donations to a church in Sierra Leone, Africa.
According to an incident report, the man was leaving a local big box store on July 1 when he was approached by the men. They told him that if he made a substantial donation, he would later receive more than $60,000. To convince him the offer was legitimate, one of the men showed the victim a black briefcase containing multiple stacks of cash.
The victim believed their story and drove the men to a local bank, where he withdrew the funds from his personal accounts. He handed them the cash, but left when the victim went back inside the bank for his forgotten cell phone.
The victim told police he had waited days to report the crime because he had been embarrassed and didn't want to admit he had been deceived, the report states. He wishes to pursue charges.
8:55 a.m. — 800 block of Candlewood Circle, Ormond Beach
Assault. Police arrested a 42-year-old man who threatened to kill an Ormond Beach family after he crashed into their parked vehicles and entered their garage.
When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was found with a puncture wound to his leg in the middle of the road. He was behaving erratically, according to a police report, and a family friend told officers the suspect was schizophrenic.
The victims reported that they had been inside their home when they heard a loud crash outside. After going outside to inspect it, they saw the suspect had struck their truck with his car. One of the victims approached the suspect to see if he was OK, to which the suspect responded that the "ground was shaking." He then threatened to kill the family.
One of the victims ran into the street to lure the suspect away from his home. That's when the family friend also came outside to try to restrain the suspect. A fight ensued, during which the suspect broke a window in the victims' garage, likely causing his leg wound, police deduced.
The victims wished to pursue charges. The family friend told police that the suspect had been recently released from jail in North Carolina.
