Criminal mischief. "Someone was illegally cutting through private property and got himself stuck in a ditch and is now taking selfies in front of the stuck vehicle."
That was the call police received concerning a 17-year-old Ormond Beach boy, the latest in what a police report noted was a series of incidents where juveniles drive off local roads and create deep tire ruts within rights-of-way, causing significant property damage.
When police arrived on the scene, the teenager and his truck were still stuck in the stormwater drainage ditch. As an officer approached, he overheard the teenager speaking with a roadside assistance service.
According to the police report, during the investigation, the teenager asked the officer, "You're not allowed to dig up here anymore?" He then followed up with, "If I knew it wasn't allowed, I wouldn't have done it." He now faces a misdemeanor.
The police report noted that the damage was valued at $888, as it would take six hours of labor to repair, at a rate of $148. The damage property is owned by the city.
11:38 a.m. — 400 block of North Nova Road, Ormond Beach
Non-reportable offense. A local synagogue received a suspicious letters in the mail and contacted police.
A synagogue employee showed the letter to police, stating she had found it in the mailbox among their other mail. The letter was enclosed in an envelope and contained a single white sheet of paper with a large red swastika, according to the police report.
Police submitted the letter into its records.
