Dear Editor:
Jill Woolbright’s recent letter to the editor (In classroom or on School Board, I put students first) in the July 9 edition of the Observer leaves out some important information.
Yes, while Woolbright “puts students first,” she is eager to have them understand the U.S. Constitution, ordained and established to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.” At the same time she is at the forefront of the movement to curtail students’ liberties to read whatever they wish to read, at the forefront of the effort to ban books from our schools that don’t meet with her personal approval.
Woolbright does correctly note that she has been there to “stand up for parents and students.” She goes on to point out that “Parents now have greater rights.”
In so doing, she totally ignores the fact that families with children cover, through their taxes, no more than 20% of the cost of maintaining and operating our schools. The remaining taxpayers cover the other 80%. Flagler County Schools belong to We the People! And, We the People overwhelmingly oppose the banning of books!
