Dear Editor:

Who ever decided to remove the traffic lights and install "all way" stop signs at the junction of Old Kings Road and Town Center Boulevard in Palm Coast should be fired for incompetence. They certainly don't know a thing about traffic control and human nature.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, there were hundreds of cars fighting to get through the corner, all at the same time, from three different directions. Horns were blaring and tempers were flaring. Drivers were aggressively trying to squeeze each other out, and many were driving over the median strip to reverse direction.

It took me 20 minutes of high stress driving to get through the corner. That's about three times more than it would have taken with traffic lights. There was not a patrol car in sight, so I called dispatch and recommended that they send one out just to assess the situation.

If it can be this bad on a Sunday afternoon, what will happen at the end of a work day when tired drivers are all trying to get back home. I predict that a rash of fender benders, and some violent actions, will take place when that happens. Those are preventable events!

Palm Coast needs to remove those stop signs now, and restore the lights. The real answer to the problem is widening the road, and the bridge, with turn lanes. Needless to say, none of this would be happening if we weren't overbuilding the area in the first place.
