Dear Editor:
Rob Wood is a welcome recent entry to the District 2 School Board race challenging incumbent, Will Furry. In a side by side comparison, Mr. Wood’s qualifications and background substantially surpasses those of Mr.Furry in both applicable experience and educational accomplishments.
Wood has an MBA, Furry has a high school diploma. Wood has over a decade of senior faculty level college experience. Most of Furry’s work experience consists of real estate sales.
Although not a School Board position qualifier, but may be attractive to some voters, Wood spent years as a U.S. Air Force jet mechanic. Furry was not in the military.
Recently, Furry decided to forgo his School Board role and launched a campaign for Florida’s 6th Congressional District. When that campaign didn’t fare well, he withdrew and circled back to the School Board race.
Furry comes with some controversial baggage arising during his time on the board. He was viewed by many as a polarizing figure embroiled in controversial culture wars, board governance instability and the inappropriate injection of politically charged partisan remarks such as blaming a "radical left" influence in public schools and student "indoctrination."
A Furry re-election could keep the board destabilized with cultural and political debate, something not healthy for a school board and a distraction from its true mission.
Rob Wood’s campaign mantra is “do no harm,” a bit vague but promising, with a stabilizing flavor. But, what can be gleaned so far in the two candidates by comparing just the usually expected fundamental qualifications for a seat on the School Board, Rob Wood stands out by a whole lot.
