In celebration of National Bicycle Month, the Florida Department of Transportation and six Central Florida schools unveiled student-created bike safety symbol icons. This initiative is part of FDOT’s ongoing efforts to promote transportation safety and the Target Zero campaign’s goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries in Florida.

Last fall, FDOT collaborated with local art teachers to engage students in designing their own bike safety symbols. Out of 99 submissions, winning designs were selected to be painted on local roads or sidewalks near the schools. Now in its fourth year, this District Five initiative gives young artists the opportunity to see their designs come to life.

Each student winner was recognized during a special bike lane artwork reveal event, which included a certificate presentation and a safety session led by FDOT and its community safety partners. Families and school staff joined to recognize the students’ creativity and commitment to safe cycling.

Design contest student winners in each county include:

  • Avalon Elementary (Orange) – Jacob Hughes, 4th grade; Chingyang Gao, 4th grade
  • Laureate Park Elementary (Orange) – Keira Abraham, 4th grade; Miranda Hernandez Ruiz, 4th grade
  • Roosevelt Elementary (Brevard) – Pedro Deleon Ramos, 1st grade; MacKenzie Beskow, 5th grade
  • Lake Orienta Elementary (Seminole) – Callan Poulsen, 3rd grade; Amelia Lanaghan, 1st grade
  • Madison Street Academy (Marion) – Ashvira Patel, 1st grade; Emma Martin, 5th grade
  • Belle Terre Elementary (Flagler) – Aubrey Engler, 2nd grade; Sean Nelson, 5th grade

“Safety is at the heart of everything we do at the Department,” said Libertad Acosta-Anderson, Passenger Operations Manager for FDOT District Five. “By promoting safety awareness through education and outreach, we’re making a lasting difference for children who walk and bike to school every day in Central Florida. And when we can deliver that message in a fun and creative way, that’s really the icing on the cake.”
