Deputies scare off car thief, get vehicle back

2:16 p.m. Belle Terre Parkway and State Road 100. Stolen vehicle: A man told deputies his van had just been stolen from the Coastal Plaza on State Road 100. A deputy saw the van, a 2002 white Ford,  heading south on Seminole Woods Parkway and tried to stop it, but the car turned onto Universal Trail and fled down an FPL access road leading to Citation Parkway. Another deputy saw the car approaching on Citation and used a light to get a look at the driver: a short-haired or bald man wearing a black jacket and smoking a cigarette. A Sheriff's Office corporal told units to break off from the traffic stop, and the deputies turned off their lights and sirens but kept track of the car. It stopped on Serbian Bellflower Trail, but by the time deputies got to the van, the thief had fled. They set up a perimeter but didn't find him. The van had a flat rear passenger tire, but a towing company fixed it up and the van was returned to its owner.

Chemical mix catches fire at paint store

2:49 a.m. 400 block of Palm Coast Parkway SW. Structure fire: A smoke alarm went off at a local paint store, and a Palm Coast fire engine responded. Firefighters found a bucket on fire inside the store. Their investigation found that "liquids that were inadvertently mixed caused the reaction," according to a summary in a Flagler County Sheriff's Office commander's report. Damage was limited to the products near the bucket. The building itself wasn't damaged.
