Failing 'grade'? Youths suspected in road grader vandalism

11 a.m. Matanzas Woods Parkway and Interstate 95 interchange. Criminal Mischief: A construction site supervisor called the Sheriff's Office to report that someone smashed in the window of a Volvo road grader overnight. The man told a deputy that youths from nearby neighborhoods had been caught pulling up survey stakes near the off-ramp before, and that workers had spoken to the kids' parents, but the vandalism continued. The deputy wrote in a case report that an extra watch would be placed on the area.

When a locked door doesn't help

6 p.m. First block of Village View Way. Residential burglary: Someone stole a purse and multiple items of jewelry and silvery cutlery from a Grand Haven home while its owners went out to dinner. The couple were only gone for about an hour and a half, they told deputies, but arrived home to find the front door bashed in, a jewelry box emptied onto the floor with jewelry missing, and a silver cutlery set stolen from a box, according to a Sheriff's Office case report. A $500 leather purse was also stolen.

Another door-bashing burglar

10:50 p.m. First block of Egan Drive. Attempted burglary: Deputies drove out to a vacant house to check on a burglar alarm. The home's front door had been bashed in, with the frame broken in several place. Deputies checked the property for suspects but couldn't find any, according to a Sheriff's Office case report. Stacks of paper and envelopes were spread all over one of the home's beds, but deputies checked with the homeowner, who said she'd left it that way after searching for a document. A TV and iPad in plain view in the house had not been stolen. A deputy used a FaceTime app to show the homeowner the home's interior, and she said nothing looked out of place.
