I have recently heard concerns from residents and members of Prince of Peace Catholic Church regarding traffic changes caused by ongoing county construction along Hand Avenue.
The concerns specifically involve restriction access to the church property from the westbound Hand Avenue and preventing drivers from exiting the church driveway by making a left turn onto Hand Avenue — a movement that had been permitted for many years. Residents and church members have expressed understandable concerns involving traffic flow, accessibility, safety during church services and events, and access to the church’s charity store, which serves members of the community.
While infrastructure improvements are important and often necessary for long-term growth and public safety, it is equally important that we listen to the people directly impacted by those changes. Good government requires more than construction plans and traffic studies — it requires communication, responsiveness, and a willingness to address unintended consequences when concerns arise.
Even though this is a county project, it is still our concern because it directly impacts the people of Ormond Beach.
I have already asked city staff to coordinate with county officials and church leadership to arrange a meeting as soon as possible so these concerns can be openly discussed and potential solutions explored. My goal is to ensure that the voices of residents, parishioners, and visitors are part of the conversation moving forward.
Infrastructure projects should improve quality of life for the community, not create unnecessary difficulties for residents trying to safely attend church, volunteer, or support charitable efforts that help others in need.
As mayor, I will continue advocating for practical and balanced solutions that prioritize both public safety and accessibility while ensuring our residents feel heard throughout the process.
