The Halifax Area Chapter of MOAA participated in Daytona Beach's Independence Day Parade on Saturday, July 4.
The parade was preceded by a veterans ceremony at the clock tower between the Boardwalk and the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. In addition to veterans, the ceremony also honored first responders.
The parade traveled west on Main Street to the base of the bridge and featured over 60 military organizations, combat veterans and members of the Daytona Beach Police and Fire departments, according to the city.
"It was a privilege to celebrate our nation’s birthday alongside so many families, veterans, and community organizations," said Cmdr. Anita Williams, president of the Halifax Area Chapter of MOAA, in an email to the Observer. "Seeing children proudly waving the American flags our members handed out reminded us why events like these are so meaningful."
Members Col. Skip Keating and his wife Joan helped coordinate the chapter's participation. Representing the chapter were: Lt. Col. Arnold Leeks; Capt. Drew Hoffman and his wife, MaryLou; Maj. Joe Peabody and his wife, Collette; Chief Warrant Officer 2 Pierre Louis; Col. Bancroft McKittrick; and Don Sebes.
"Their willingness to volunteer their time and proudly represent MOAA reflects the spirit of continued service that defines our organization," Williams said.
