Florida native and artist Gina Bickish is bringing highwaymen-style paint parties to The Casements this month.

Bickish, who studied for several years with two original Highwaymen artists —the late R. L. Lewis, Jr. and Curtis Arnett — will lead three painting events at The Casements:

  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15
  • 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 16
  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22

Students will paint a view of the Loop with overhanging Spanish moss on May 15, a local beach scene on May 16, and a Tomoka River painting on May 22.

The original Highwaymen artists were a group of 26 black artists from Central and South Florida who largely bypassed the art gallery system during the Jim Crow years and afterward. Several were taught by well-known white artist “Bean” Backus, and they, in turn, taught or influenced others. Their work usually depicts natural Florida themes, often featuring bright colors. The paintings are highly collectible now, and the original 26 artists were inducted into the Florida Artists’ Hall of Fame.

The classes are $40, which includes all supplies. It will be held in The Casements’ upstairs art room at 25 Riverside Drive, Ormond Beach. Students are only asked to bring a smock or apron and are invited to bring a light lunch and a friend. Call or text 386-956-6891 for more information and registration.
