The Ormond Beach Police Department recently awarded a certificate of appreciation to Capt. Scott Cornelius of the Tomoka Outpost for his help with a rescue.

According to the certificate, on May 21, officers were responding to an emergency call on the Tomoka River where a jet ski with three riders crashed with a tree. As there were no available marine law enforcement resources to assist with the search of the injured persons, Cornelius used his boat to drive first responders to search the water and shoreline, and ultimately helped locate the riders, who were in need of medical attention.

"Because of Scott's courteous act, the injured were safely transported back to shore where they were treated," the certificate states. "Scott Cornelius is an important and valued member of the Ormond Beach community."

Cornelius is a lifelong Ormond Beach resident. He and his wife Ashley purchased the Tomoka Outpost inside Tomoka State Park in 2015.
