Coastal Fabric & Foam is in its 48th year of business — and the longtime family-owned store recently moved to Ormond Beach.

Now located in the downtown on the beachside at 220 E. Granada Blvd., Coastal Fabric & Foam sells first quality upholstery fabrics, drapery fabrics, upholstery supplies and foam rubber. The store specializes in fabrics for home, office, events, auto, marine and aircraft, and upholstery for residential, commercial and marine.

And it's a business the Webber family takes pride in.

Coastal Fabric & Foam was started by Lynda's mother and late stepfather, JoAnn and Sam Moretz.

JoAnn got into the business after she met Sam, who had an upholstery shop in North Carolina with his cousin. JoAnn took note of some of the fabrics they used, noting they were beautiful, so she suggested they sell some of it themselves. Their store was originally called Moretz Fabric & Foam.

"That's how it started and one day, we had this big building that we built on U.S. 1 in Holly Hill — it was a huge building," JoAnn recalled. "And one day he said to me, 'How do you like this quaint little fabric shop?' I mean, we were open six days a week, and we even worked on Sundays."

JoAnn's daughter, Lynda Webber, the store's interior design coordinator, took over and renamed the store in 2011.

For decades, the store was located off U.S. 1 in Holly Hill. When the lease ended on their last location, Lynda said she felt it was time to downsize and concentrate on the fabric side of the business. Their previous building spanned about 5,000 square feet; now, they have about 1,800 and store their foam off-site.

In the past, Coastal Foam & Fabric sold upholstery supplies to suppliers; that changed with the rise of the internet.

Fabric is a different story, Lynda said, as people still want to see and feel them in person. As such, the boutique-style feel of the new store is better suited for today's clients, which skew toward the retail side.

"It was different back then," she said. "It was 95% wholesale customers only, and today it's the other way around."

The Webbers are hoping to do more commercial work in the area, particularly with hotels and restaurants.

It's been interesting to see the difference that moving to Ormond Beach has made on their business, Lynda said. The family has felt welcomed and their customer base from Holly Hill has been very complimentary of the new store, she added.

Plus, it's added a new group into the mix: tourists.

"We've been getting massive compliments from the out-of-town people that are not here to purchase — they just wanted to look because they don't have a fabric store either near them, and they have been very impressed with our store and the quality of the goods that we're carrying," Lynda said. "That's been refreshing."

Showroom manager Ryan Webber said the new store has been a necessary upgrade as far as location and customers.

"Before, even though we were on a main road, we weren't really a main shopping area, and where this is a more tourist district and with all the improvements that the city of Ormond Beach has done, I really think that's going to bring attention to the fact that, 'Hey, here's a family-owned and operated business for almost 50 years,'" Ryan said. "That you can trust us with your home and quality products.

"Beachside, good vibes," added Shay Webber, warehouse manager.
