SunBros Cafe in Flagler Beach was built on a foundation of family and good coffee, and the Sundells' new drive-thru coffee shop in Ormond Beach is continuing that vision.
Located at 14 S. Yonge St., the 250-square-foot SunBros Coffee is celebrating its grand opening after almost two years in the works. It is the second location for the Sundell family, of Flagler Beach, who opened their cafe at 301 Moody Blvd. in 2021.
Abrien Sundell, 21, is taking up the helm of the family business after the unexpected death of his father, Travis, last year.
"I take a lot of pride in that this is my family's business," Abrien said. "... I'm carrying on what he started."
SunBros was Travis' dream, said his brother Dan Sundell. That dream was born about 10 years ago while Dan was living in Europe. The two brothers were sitting in a cafe in Salzburg, Austria, drinking great coffee when they decided to open a coffee shop together.
And they did so just a few years later.

Dan, a St. Augustine resident, now helps out in the cafe when needed as Abrien works to get the drive-thru coffee shop.
"I just want to support the family," he said. "I want Abrien and his mom and his brother to be successful, so we're working hard to grow the business and provide something nice to the community."
The Sundell experienced some hurdles as they worked to open the coffee shop. One being the size of the lot, as the property spans just 50 feet wide. Ormond Beach's Land Development Code standards typically require a minimum lot width of 100 feet for the land use.
The coffee shop replaced the former Massey Auto Brokers property, whose owner retired. In January 2025, the City Commission approved a special exception redevelopment plan to allow the Sundells to build the drive-thru location.
"It was definitely a little tight to squeeze this thing in here, but it seemed like a pretty good spot," Abrien said.
A drive-thru coffee shop was the original concept for SunBros, Abrien said. He has been working as a barista for the family business since he was 16. That's when his love of coffee started too.
He was able to tour the Kaldi’s Coffee Roasting Company roastery in St. Louis and see the process, and that piqued his interest.
"My favorite thing, coffee-wise — we make our vanilla syrup in house — so our House Vanilla Latte," he said. "I always drink hot, even when it's hot out."

SunBros Coffee's menu includes espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos, as well as matcha, frappes, teas and refreshers. The coffee shop also sells pastries, made at the cafe location in Flagler Beach.
Abrien said he hopes SunBros continues to grow.
"Being able to do something different and do something new, be somewhere new, meet new people... it's a fun experience," he said. "We definitely hope to expand once this starts growing and moving."
Dan said Abrien has stepped up to the plate to run the family business in the wake of the family's loss. All the restaurants and businesses in Flagler Beach rallied around Abrien to help them reopen after they lost Travis last year, Dan said.
He's proud of his nephew. Travis would be too, he said.
"The community here (in Flagler Beach) supports us very well, and we fully hope that Ormond will do the same," Dan said.
