The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence at Dunson Estates Road in Bunnell on July 2 in reference to a weapons complaint.
The victim told dispatch that he was in an argument with his neighbor, 62-year-old Wyatt Cunningham, and minutes later heard gunshots outside his home. When the victim went to inspect the noise, he noticed fresh bullet holes in his front door.
FCSO arrived on scene and inspected the area and observed three bullet holes in the victim’s front door. Further inspection found multiple bullet fragments inside the victim’s home and also one single bullet that had traveled from the victim’s house and into a neighboring residence.
Detectives met with Cunningham outside of his home.
Cunningham told detectives that he did have an argument with the victim over being owed $10 but he did not have anything to do with the gunshots. Cunningham then invited the detectives to come inside his home and have a look around. Detectives discovered a yellow metal gun cabinet containing a large rifle and ammunition.
A search of Cunningham’s criminal history revealed that he is a convicted felon, making his possession of a firearm illegal.
Cunningham was placed under arrest and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was initially held on a $5,000 bond.
Since then, the FCSO has collected additional evidence to forensically prove the bullet fragments recovered at the victim's residence came from Cunningham’s rifle.
Detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest on Nov. 7 for shooting into a building.
“I am very proud of our team and the great work they did collecting and analyzing the evidence for these additional charges,” Sheriff Rick Staly said.
Cunningham was arrested without incident and taken to the Flagler County Jail. He is charged with two counts of shooting into a building. He is being held without bond.
