Nothing could get in the way of Flagler Palm Coast's football team when an opportunity at clinching a district title was suddenly within reach: not a soggy home field, not exchanging a home game for an away game and certainly not the opposing team's defense.
After a week of heavy rain made FPC's Sal Campanella Field unplayable, the Bulldogs were able to defeat DeLand 38-16 on the night of Friday, Oct. 20, at Spec Martin Stadium, DeLand's home field. With Mandarin's 35-28 loss to Spruce Creek in double overtime, FPC clinched a district title.
Running back Ty Jenkins ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns, including a 21-yarder in the first half. Sophomore running back Marc Genis scored from thee yards out in the second quarter, and senior Jimmie Robinson chipped 66 yards. In total, the Bulldogs bulldozed DeLand for 256 yards on the ground.
Defensive backs Dennis Short and Savigone Murphy each recorded interceptions, with Murphy taking his back to the house in the fourth quarter for his second pick-six of the year.
With the title, the nightmare of FPC's most recent seasons has finally come to an end. The Bulldogs won seven total games in the past two years prior to head coach Travis Roland's arrival. This year, they've won eight.
The Bulldogs suit up to play Mandarin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Sal Campanella Field for the end of the regular season.
