Palm Coast United Methodist Church hosted its 15th annual Football Sunday Worship Experience on Sunday, Aug. 9, bringing together football players, cheerleaders, coaches, faculty and staff from Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools for a morning of faith, fellowship and encouragement for the upcoming school year and football season.
Attendees from both schools were welcomed with a continental breakfast. Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore opened the service by encouraging the students to embrace the opportunities ahead and approach the year with confidence and purpose.
FPC head football coach Patrick Turner challenged his players to “pursue and persevere for the prize,” highlighting the team's motto, “Be Your Best.” Referencing Ecclesiastes 9:10, he encouraged the athletes to strive to be their best not only as football players, but also as teammates, classmates and people. He reminded them to remain humble and keep God at the center of their journey.
Matanzas head coach Matt Forrest shared a powerful and personal message about faith, perseverance,and the importance of leaning on God during difficult and dark seasons. Reflecting on the passing of his mother-in-law over the summer, he shared how his team surrounded him and his wife, Ashley, providing a safe space during a difficult time.
Through his players and the football family, they found joy again and were reminded of the importance of community. He connected the experience to the church, emphasizing the value of being surrounded by like-minded people who share a desire to make the world a better place.
FPC and Matanzas football players participated in the Scripture reading before Rev. Dr. Kevin James delivered the sermon, “Divine DoorDash.” Drawing connections between football, Elijah, and the “gaps” people experience throughout life, Rev. James encouraged students to use the Bible as their playbook.
He reminded them that whatever they face, they can find guidance, strength, and encouragement in Scripture.
