With hurricane season approaching, Security First Insurance, 140 S. Atlantic Ave., is encouraging residents to download their new mobile app that tracks storms and provides related information, such as preparation tips, evacuation routes, shelters, etc.
The app, for Apple or android, is free and it is not necessary to be a policy holder. The user's home address can be displayed on the map, and another prominent feature is that the user can post the storm track to Facebook or Twitter to let family and friends know the storm status.
Policy holders can also review their policy, file a claim, contact the company, send pictures, etc.
Werner E. Kruck, chief operating officer and director, said that in Hurricane Sandy and other recent storms, it was found that a significant amount of claims were issued by mobile phones.
“If there is a major catastrophe, chances are the home is damaged, or you can’t get to your home, and that’s where your policy is,” he said.
Kirsten Stroud, marketing manager, emphasized that the main feature is the storm tracker, and while policyholder services are available, they do not detract from storm tracking function.
Security First had its first mobile app developed in 2010, when the technology was in its early stages for insurance companies.
“We wanted to start early and learn,” Kruck said. “One way we have distinguished ourselves is in the way we’ve used technology.”
Their latest mobile app was developed by a company in North Carolina called PointSource.
Security First is in its 11th year and has become the third-largest homeowner insurance company in Florida. They are currently seeking employees, and positions are posted on the company website. They expect to grow this year from 115 to 200 employees and have plans to purchase land where they can construct a new building.
“It’s a good problem to have,” Kruck said. “We are out of room.”
