+ Girls lacrosse

The Matanzas Lady Pirates defeated the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs 12-10 on a rainy Tuesday, Feb. 17, at FPC.

Bailee Hurd and Annie Dougherty led the Pirates with five and four, respectively. Katie Winters netted two, and Erica Payavis added one. Goalie Genna Rosso saved 11 balls.

For FPC, Dakota Zdun scored four goals, while Kelly Kastner put in three. Nicole LiCasi, Margo Reed and Matisse Feldman each had one. Goalie Jordan Pogue had 16 saves for the Lady Bulldogs.


FPC, Matanzas girls state final results: weightlifting

Matanzas and FPC had three girls each reach the state finals for weightlifting. For Matanzas, Kayla Short, Brianna Evans and Kayla Dillon competed, and FPC had Darien Halliday, Ashley Harris and Kayla Hooper.
Short placed 12th in the unlimited weight class, lifting a total of 370 pounds in the benching and clean and jerk. Dillon came in 16th in the 199-pound class, lifting a total of 305 pounds, and Evans, 21st, lifting 260 pounds.

Halliday placed 13th for FPC, lifting 220 pounds. Harris got a Palm Coast’s best: eighth-place in the 154-pound weight class, lifting 330 pounds. Hooper finished in 13th in the 199-pound weight class, lifting 305 pounds. All girls set personal and school records in both events.

Palm Coast will host the inaugural Flagler/Volusia Senior All-Star Classic at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Indian Trails Sports Complex at 5455 Belle Terre Parkway.

Seniors from all schools were dived into white and dark uniform teams. Flagler Palm Coast’s players on the dark teams are Nate Monsanto and Robby Ferguson, and those from Matanzas are Nick Weber and Sam Manns. Players on the white team include Gabe Orren, Denis Dineen and Pablo Felix from FPC, and Bryan Mejia and Daniel Cerdeira from Matanzas.

“The intent of this is to showcase and celebrate the boys and their careers and give them an opportunity to showcase their skills in playing with other great players in the area,” said Rich Weber, the event organizer.

The cost for the event is $3 per person and $5 per carload. It will be free for all members of the media, high school coaches, athletics directors and college coaches.

Track and field
FPC’s boys team finished in first place overall, while the girls placed second at the Flagler Pinnacle Classic on Monday, Feb. 16, at FPC. Of the 36 events recorded on halfmiletiming.com, FPC finished in first place 18 times, including many second and third finishes as well.

Tennis
With early losses by repeating district champions, Spruce Creek and Buchholz, FPC sits with a 2-2 record after a girls and boys’ win over New Smyrna Beach on Feb. 11, at FPC. The boys won all their matches by a combined score of 56-5 in seven matches, and the girls won four of the three matches.
FPC’s next home meet will be against Mandarin on Monday, Feb. 23.

Track and field
Matanzas Pole vault jumpers Jon Guilbe and Savannah Drummonds placed first with jumps of 13 feet, 6 inches and 10 feet, 6 inches at the Flagler Pinnacle Classic Monday, Feb. 16, at FPC. Eddie Hidalgo also came in second with a jump of 12 feet, 6 inches, all setting personal records.

Girls tennis
After holding down the top tennis spot for the past three years, senior Dominic Davis has passed the torch to sophomore Peyton Haney. Davis is a two-time district champion and has advanced to the state finals twice, being the only varsity player to have done so.
