On the night where Matanzas honored its seniors and the Pink Army of the Flagler and Volusia counties, the Lady Pirates defeated the Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs 18-25, 25-11, 25-10 and 25-19 in a rivalry rematch.

“It’s pretty awesome beating FPC not once but twice,” Lilly Pere said. “It’s even more awesome that we beat them on our senior night.”

FPC began the match hot, often silencing the crowd in the first set, the only set they won. Then, the Lady Pirates regrouped, and the match seemed all but over, until the Lady Bulldogs put together an effort to force a fifth and final set in the fourth, when the teams were tied at 16 apiece. The Lady Pirates won nine of the next 12 serves to win the match.

“We usually don’t expect to beat larger schools, so to beat them (FPC) twice this year is a big confidence builder for us,” coach Julie Menendez said.

The seniors for the Lady Pirates are Lilly Perez, Andrea Menendez, Rachel Kolodin, Monica Lao, Brooklyn Jimeson and Chantelina Espinoza.

“I’m going to miss their leadership,” Menendez added. “I’ve been with those girls for six years during club season and now, so this was this was my first group that we brought up.”

“I’ve been with coach Julie (Menendez) for seven years,” Perez said. “She’s been my coach for my entire volleyball career, so I’m going to miss her, as well as my teammates, because I’ve played with them for so many years.”

For the Lady Pirates, Kaylee Mandt completed nine kills, Yailaris Garcia six. Jessica Malmsten finished with 11 assists, Lillly Perez seven. Andrea Menendez had 31 serves, one being a miss and three aces with 15 digs.
