The Golden Lion Café set out on a new adventure April 15 with the launch of the sale of its Key Lime Tartar Sauce in all five Flagler County Publix locations and two Volusia County stores, with 50% of the profits designated as donation to the Flagler Resource Center in Bunnell. Now, a third Volusia County store has been added and talks with Winn-Dixie have been initiated.

To kick off the partnership, The Golden Lion donated $500 Friday, May 30 to the center.

“The need here is huge, but sometimes you don’t even realize it until it’s in front of your face,” said Chris Marlow, who took the tartar sauce project as his own. “We’re fortunate enough to where we are not in the sauce business, but it’s a subsidiary of the restaurant, and we want to give back to the community.”

In the first month of sales, Marlow said that they have met expectations, which is why he wanted to give the upfront donation to the pantry.

“The tartar sauce market is kind of a slow dead market, but we’ve introduced something different, flavorful and colorful, and it’s been good,” Marlo said.

For the resource center, having the partnership and support of the Golden Lion means that not only do they receive more funding, but it also serves as an awareness tool for the pantry itself.

“I’m always delighted when a business in our local community looks to expand and enhance service groups,” said Bette Rountree, president of Church Women United, the group that runs the pantry. “The more community involvement and the support for local businesses, the better. There’s no better advertising than having business promote the need that we should all be participating in.”

The $500 donation will feed roughly five families of four.

The panty is run entirely by volunteers and is a partner with Flagler County. It services an average of 95 families per week.

Those receiving resources from the resource center must prove Flagler County residency and can only come every other month.

“We don’t have the means to feed everyone weekly or monthly,” Rountree said. “We are a supplement, not the grocery store.”

But the $500 donation is just the beginning. The Golden Lion will also be hosting a Seafood Festival June 14-15 that will feature a variety of seafood stations throughout the restaurant. A raffle each day will also donated 50% of the cash pot to the pantry.

“The Golden Lion is really well known and established and we think it’s a positive thing to help these people in our community,” Marlow said.
