The local girls roller derby team raised money to help keep their practice space at Destination Daytona.

If you were driving down Oceanshore Boulevard on Saturday, you might have seen Karen “Smash Tanker” Petersen skating, shouting and getting the word out.

The Sintral Florida Derby Demons hosted a Family and Friends Beach Day to raise money to keep their practice space at Destination Daytona.

"We practice right there under the Coca-Cola Pavilion,” blocker Tara Side said. “Ideally, we’d like to raise $1,000. That’s about a month’s rent for us.”

Side said the sport was made for women who don’t play well with other women. And having a little anger to get out doesn’t hurt either.

“I needed to hit people during a divorce about eight years ago,” Side said, "and  I’ve been hitting people ever since. The camaraderie of it is neat because all of a sudden you have this big family and this big sisterhood.”

"I wanted to join roller derby because it was something different,” team President Erin Lariviere said. “These ladies are from all different walks of life and backgrounds. It’s really neat to have so many different personalities on the team.”

The female roller derby team is currently in season. Their next home game is June 21. Visit their Facebook page for more information.
