The third-annual MayDay Memorial Surf Classic hit the beach Saturday, May 11, with 89 competitors, almost three times as many as the first year, which yielded 30 surfers.

The contest, which is organized by local pro surfer and Miss Flagler County Haley Watson, was started to honor Watson’s mom, Dollie Sue Watson, after she died in 2006. She was 48. The event is designed to promote awareness of heart disease.

“I don’t think it could have gone any better,” Watson said, reflecting on the event. “The weather was awesome, the waves were great — I think it’s my mom that pulled through providing us with great surf all day.”

For Watson, the most exciting difference in the event this year was the addition of the Halifax Health Foundation as a sponsor. Proceeds from the contest will be donated to the foundation for continued heart disease education and prevention.

Though Watson had already founded MayDay Memorial as a nonprofit organization before she was crowned last June, she said having the event as her platform made the event that much more special.

“Before I had the crown, I always had the passion for helping people and carrying on my mom’s legacy,” she said.

And after she passes the crown on next month, Watson said she will continue in her quest to raise awareness and fight heart disease, especially in women.
