The track-and-field season might be over for many high school athletes in Florida, but that’s not the case for Flagler Palm Coast’s top sprinters.

Five sprinters competed over the weekend at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor, held at North Carolina A&T State University, in Greensboro, N.C.

The boys competed in two relays: the 1,600-meter medley and the 4x400-meter relay.

The team took 12th in the 1,600-meter medley, which consists of two 200s, a 400 and an 800. The finishing time was 3:32.63 minutes — the fastest time in FPC’s track-and-field history.

Turrel Mathews ran his 200 in 21.8 seconds; Eric Mejias’ 200 split was 22.3 seconds. Andrew Folk ran the 400 in 49.4 seconds, and Kadeem Williams finished the 800 meters in 1.58.4 minutes.

The 4x400-meter relay placed sixth in the nation, earning an All-American title. The team’s time was a season-best 3:16.13 — good enough for second-fastest time in school history.

The team features Eddie Mutungu, Folk, Mejias and William.

Top six finishers are named All-Americans at the event.

“(This) caps off a pretty successful season,” FPC track-and-field coach David Halliday said.

Team Flagler senior softball to hold fundraiser
Team Flagler of the Flagler County Senior Softball League will be representing Florida at the ISSA U.S. Southern Championships July 12-14, in Auburn, Ala.

Local players range in age from 60 to 67. About 40 teams from throughout the United States will compete at the tournament.

To help offset expenses, the team is holding a fundraiser 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at 1096 U.S. 1 N. in Ormond Beach (next to the Iron Horse Saloon and just 1 mile north of Nova Road). Many donations are for sale, including antiques, books, collectibles, electronics, fishing, furniture, golf, household, military, motorcycle equipment, scouting, small appliances, sporting goods/memorabilia and tools.

All proceeds from the sale will help cover the entry fee for the tournament, travel expenses and more. Donations from local businesses accepted.
