There will be new faces for swimming and girls golf at Matanzas High School when sports resume in the fall, Athletics Director Bob Nocella announced earlier this week.

Carrie Purdy takes over as the school’s swimming coach. Purdy, the former coach at Seabreeze High School, takes over for Corinne Schaefer.

Dave Chalice will take over the girls golf program. Chalice, a physical therapist in Palm Coast, replaces Louise Wolfe.

Tony Zaksewicz has also stepped down as the boys basketball coach, though he will continue to teach.

Nocella said he hasn’t found a replacement yet, and that an announcement likely won’t come until next week “at the earliest.” Interested coaching candidates can contact Nocella via email at [email protected].

Purdy began swimming in high school. She later attended The University of Akron on a swimming scholarship.

Throughout her collegiate years, she began her coaching career at the Western Reserve Seariders as an age-group coach, coached at the Stanford University Swim camps and stayed on with the Zips her fifth year as a student coach.

Purdy continued to coach at The University of Hawaii at Monoa as a graduate assistant for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving program, while pursuing a master’s degree.

In 2004, she returned to lifeguarding for the Volusia County Beach Patrol. She attended Daytona State College to obtain her AAS Degree as a licensed physical therapist assistant.

During that time she coached for Daytona SPEED, a USA Swimming team. Purdy was the head swimming and diving coach at Seabreeze High School for six years.

Chalice was a golf teaching professional for 10 years throughout Florida. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist since 2005, and he also has certifications as a fitness pro, golf pro and junior coach from the Titleist Performance Institute.

“I have a passion for golf and especially love working with juniors,” Chalice said. “I am truly excited and honored to be given the opportunity to coach the girls high school golf team this season.”
