Flagler Palm Coast soccer players Martin Maschio and Nicholas Monsanto signed their letters of intent Friday to play soccer in college.

Maschio, a forward, will play at Division II Erskine College, in Due West, S.C., and major in criminal justice. Born into a military family, Maschio lived in Japan for four years, where he played varsity for two years before moving to Palm Coast and finishing his last two years at FPC.

“He’s been phenomenal,” coach Noah Braun said at the signing. “He’s a great competitor.”

Monsanto, a center back, will play at Division III Oglethorpe University, in Atlanta, and major in sports management. Monsanto is an IB student and was the varsity soccer captain.

“I personally believe that it’s about the journey, not the destination, and (signing) is another step in my journey as a player,” Monsanto said. “I’m really thankful that I’m able to accomplish this and it doesn't end here.”

Monsanto also received an academic scholarship to pay for three years of schooling.

“Nick is a leader on the field, leader off the field, and is a great young man,” Braun said. “I’m very proud of him and his dedication. It shows a lot about his character, his discipline and his motivation.”
