Behind Brock Underberg’s dominant pitching, the Palm Coast All-Stars defeated South Putnam Saturday in Round 1.

Palm Coast starting pitcher Brock Underberg struck out eight of the 11 outs he recorded, Ayden Craig launched a three-run homer and the Palm Coast Majors All-Stars team cruised to a 11-1 drubbing of South Putnam Saturday morning at the Indian Trails Sports Complex.

Despite a dominant start, Underberg was lifted in the bottom of the fourth inning by coach Doug Berryhill so he could pitch again with two days’ rest. (He was slated to be the starting pitcher for Tuesday’s elimination game at DeLand.)

Underberg threw 80% of his pitches for strikes and was able to locate his fastball and throw his off-speed pitches for strikes, Berryhill said.

Starting shortstop Kyler Kirwan came on in relief to get the final out and secure the mercy-rule victory.

Palm Coast finished the game with 10 total hits and six extra-base hits, including two doubles by catcher Emerson Cheney and Craig’s homer.

On Sunday, Palm Coast lost to DeBary, 11-1, for its first loss in the double-elimination tournament. Palm Coast left seven runners on base.

Berryhill said that, despite his team having plenty of baseball experience, half the team is 12 years old and the other half includes 11-year-olds, adding: “It is a young All-Star team, but I believe the strength of the team is defense.”

Berryhill said the team would practice for about 90 minutes on Monday night instead of the usual 2.5 hours.

“We are going to focus on hitting with confidence and letting the boys have a good time,” Berryhill said. “Baseball has to be fun for the boys, and we want them to relax and play with confidence.”

GAME NO. 3
The Palm Coast Majors All-Stars, coached by Doug Berryhill, played in the third game of the double-elimination tournament 7 p.m. Tuesday, against DeLand.
