The girls golf team was the first golf team in Matanzas’ history to make it to the state tournament.

The Lady Pirates finished 16th in the state. Over the course of the two days, the scores were as follows:

+ Pirates bowling team: best in Matanzas High School history
The Matanzas boys bowling team finished the season with the best record in Pirates history, at 13-5.

In the Flagler-Volusia district match Nov. 1, at the AMF Deltona Lanes, in Orange City, the Pirates finished in third place out of nine schools.

The Pirates advanced to the Baker Double Elimination Tournament later that day, when they lost to University High School, 3-2. They also lost to Mainland High School, 3-1.

Coach Frank Novak, who is in his seventh season as the boys coach, said this season was by far the best for the school and the bowling program in its history.

Novak said his team broke all kinds of records, but he’s most proud of their hard work, dedication and true sportsmanship. Bowlers include Ian Davies, Matt Manzione, Branden Gynizio, Christian Sikes, Mannix Leach, Josh Vandenbergh, Vincent Lopez and Michael Screder.

Mary Rodgers will make history Thursday, Nov. 10, at Matanzas High School.

Rodgers, a senior, will sign her National Letter of Intent to play golf for the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville. She’s the first female athlete in Matnzas’ history to sign at the Division I level.

+ Palm Coast golfer converts first hole-in-one
Jim Derickson, of Palm Coast, accomplished the feat all golfers hope to do some day. He unsheathed his 8-iron Saturday, Nov. 5, at the River Bend Golf Club, on the par-three, 120-yard 12th hole.

Initially, Derickson planned to hit a 9-iron, but the strong wind gusts convinced him to go with the lower club.

This was Derickson’s first hole-in-one in 12 years of golf. Bob Rees, Tom Howell and Rick Gabriel were in the foursome as Derickson’s witness.
