+ Lady Pirates basketball off to best start in school history
The Matanzas Lady Pirates basketball team rallied Nov. 28 to defeat Christian Academy, 44-43, and are now off to the best start in school history.
The Lady Pirates (3-2) have never won more than five games in a season. There are still 20 regular-season games remaining.
“We are playing really well as a team,” first-year coach Brian Morris said Tuesday, noting that the team went 2-2 without senior guard Cristina Cheberko, who tweaked a nagging knee injury that stems back to her sophomore season.
Junior guard Margaret Calhoun is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 11 points a game. Calhoun has made 10 3-pointers so far. Guard Morgan Pearson and forward Alexis Wells have played strong defense through the early part of the season, accounting for more than 25 steals through the first five games. Defensively, the Lady Pirates are giving up 42 points per game.
Matanzas will be tested in the coming days, though. The first district game will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Pedro Menendez. Then, the Lady Pirates visit FPC 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Finally, Matanzas travels to state-ranked St. Augustine 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5.
+ Undefeated Pirates soccer hits the road
The Matanzas Pirates boys soccer team opened its season with three straight home games, but now it’s time to hit the road.
The Pirates (2-0-1, 1-0) began the season with a 3-1 win over Taylor. Last season, Taylor scored more than 100 goals. Coach Rich Weber’s Pirates kept Taylor’s scoring threats in check, controlling the midfield with seniors Ben Capua and Ryan Kosinski.
The Pirates led Pedro Menendez, 2-1, but then gave up a goal with less than six seconds on the clock to end up with a tie.
The Pirates then mercy-ruled Clay, 8-0. The Pirates had seven players score goals in the Nov. 15 game: Kosinski, Javier Reyes, Eric Scarpa, Eric LaVerne, Nick Weber, Eric Laverne and Ty Santana.
The Pirates will get into the strength of their district schedule following the Thanksgiving break. The next three games for the Pirates are on the road, with the next home game being 7 p.m. Dec. 8, against Nease.
The Pirates play FPC 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at FPC.
+ Flagler PAL cheerleading nabs regional trophies
Two Flagler County cheerleading squads earned the county’s first regional competition trophies last weekend.
The Pee Wee squad placed fourth in the region, and the Junior Midget squad placed third.
The Southeast region consists of squads from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.
To get a spot in the regional competition, the Pee Wee squad placed first in the district, which is for Volusia and Flagler counties. The Junior Midget squad placed second.
“We are extremely proud of all of these girls’ accomplishments and hard work,” said Cheryl Hornstein, assistant cheer coordinator for Flagler PAL.
+ FPC wrestling wins tourney
The Flagler Palm Coast High School wrestling team claimed the second-annual Flagler Dental Associates Flagler Duals title Wednesday, Nov. 24, at FPC.
The Bulldogs out-wrestled 10 other teams, going 5-0, and had four undefeated wrestlers. Celebration High School took second place.
The Bulldogs junior varsity squad also won the tournament title.

+ Middle school basketball program set to begin
The Flagler County middle school basketball program is readying for its fifth season.
Middle school basketball players between sixth and eighth grades are able to play, though fifth-grade players will be evaluated.
All games will be played at Rymfire Elementary School.
Early registration takes place through Jan. 7. Cost is $60 for early registration, $75 for regular registration; and down payment is $40.
