On May 5, members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 44 were issued a mayor's proclamation designating May 16-22 as National Safe Boating Week.

The proclamation recognizes Flotilla 44's commitment to education, vessel inspections and maritime safety within the local community.

Flotilla 44, a volunteer branch of the U.S. Coast Guard, has been a staple in Ormond Beach since 1941, according to a press release. During the meeting, Flotilla Commander James Hans accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Flotilla, reinforcing their mission to reduce accidents through proactive outreach.

During Safe Boating Week, Flotilla 44 will be amping up its local presence by offering:

  • Free Vessel Safety Checks: Ensuring all required safety gear — like life jackets and fire extinguishers — is on board and functional.
  • Educational Workshops: Briefing new and experienced boaters on local navigation and "Rules of the Road."
  • Life Jacket Awareness: Reminding the public that "Life Jackets Worn… Nobody Mourns."

"According to recent maritime data, a significant majority of boating accidents involve operators who have not received formal safety instruction," tthe press release states. "Flotilla 44 aims to change that statistic one boat at a time."

Quick tips for Safe Boating Week:

  • Check your gear: Ensure there is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for every person on board.
  • File a Float Plan: Always let someone on land know where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Check the forecast before leaving the dock; Florida storms can develop in minutes.
  • Stay sober: Operating a vessel under the influence is just as dangerous, and illegal, as driving a car.
