Drivers traveling through Palm Coast's Town Center should soon experience shorter delays and safer intersections as the city's latest traffic improvement project nears completion.
The project, expected to wrap up by July 2, converts the intersections of Town Center Boulevard and Royal Palms Parkway and Town Center Boulevard and Old Kings Road into multi-way stop-controlled intersections. Lighted three-way stop signs are being installed at Royal Palms Parkway, while the existing traffic signal at Old Kings Road will operate as a flashing red signal in all directions.
Sean Castillo, the city's traffic engineer, said the changes were prompted by both resident complaints and traffic data.
"The left turn coming off Royal Palms throughout the day is very heavy, especially in the morning," Castillo said. "It has a tendency to back up anywhere from 500 to 1,000 feet. People are trying to look for gaps, and the gaps aren't there."
City engineers found that improving the Royal Palms intersection alone would push more vehicles toward Old Kings Road, creating new congestion. As a result, both intersections are being modified simultaneously.
Castillo said the project will improve traffic flow while making the intersections safer for pedestrians.
"For Royal Palms and Town Center, the people on Royal Palms are going to be able to get through the intersection significantly faster," Castillo said. "There's also a trail crossing right there, so people driving on Town Center will have to stop whenever there's someone there going to cross the roadway."
At Old Kings Road, Castillo said shorter wait times should reduce risky driving behavior.
"People aren't going to have to wait as long to go," he said. "There's going to be less of a chance of people going off the road to pass folks that are waiting."
