MAINLAND AD NAMED FHSAA MALE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

Mainland High School athletic director Terrence Anthony has been named Male Educator of the Year at the Florida High School Athletic Association's FLASHY (Florida Leadership & Athletic Sports Honors Yearly) awards show on June 7.

Anthony has dedicated 30 years to his high school alma mater as track and field coach, assistant football coach and athletic director. In 2021, Anthony was named the Volusia County School District's first Mentor of the Year.

He said that he is honored to win the award, but it's not just about him.

“My mission is to change lives,” he said. "I'm so happy that I have so many coaches under me who have the same vision. It's not about the wins and losses. It's about the kids.”

McFall is FPC’s first weightlifter to receive a full scholarship for the emerging college sport. Tusculum announced in April that it is starting Olympic weightlifting as a new club sport. Jared Carter, who was hired weeks earlier from Mars Hill University as Tusculum’s director of sports performance, will coach the weightlifting team.

“He just recently recruited me wanting to kickstart the program,” McFall said. “It completely came out of nowhere.”

McFall is one of the first three members of Tusculum’s team joining another freshman and a transfer from Carter’s Mars Hill team, McFall said.

USA Weightlifting governs college Olympic weightlifting, which is growing as a varsity sport with more schools offering scholarships.

McFall said Tusculum is in “kind of a dream location” for him.

“My grandparents have a cabin not too far from there in North Carolina,” he said. “It’s a beautiful location for a campus up in the mountains.”

McFall won the Class 3A Olympic title in the unlimited weight class last month, setting a school-record with a 660-pound total in the snatch and clean and jerk.

The Father’s Day Lacrosse Invitational is one of three annual Florida United Lacrosse tournaments in Palm Coast. The others are the Great Pumpkin Shootout and the Veteran’s Day Invitational.

"For 18 years, this tournament has brought athletes and families from across Florida to Palm Coast, and we're proud to continue that tradition," James Hirst, Palm Coast’s director of Parks and Recreation, said in a press release. "Events like this showcase our outstanding sports facilities, generate significant economic impact for local businesses, and create memorable experiences for players, parents, and visitors alike."

The city estimates that the tournament will generate about $1.8 million in economic impact through hotels, dining and other spending by visitors.
