PIRATES’ STRICKLAND TO PLAY BASEBALL AT KEISER UNIVERSITY

Matanzas’ Monty Strickland has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Keiser University.

“Monty is the type of guy you love having on your team. He always shows up with a positive attitude and is ready to work," Matanzas baseball coach Sean MacManus said. “Monty really shined for us in the second half of the season when he took over the starting job at first base. He saved our infielders on more occasions than I can count. He really gave us that spark with every pick and diving stop he made. He was a tough out at the plate and really made pitchers work with two strikes. I’m super happy to see Monty moving and and playing at the next level.”

Victor Ortiz of Palm Coast has been selected as a member of the inaugural class of the New York State BMX Hall of Fame.

Ortiz was recognized for his his contributions and impact on the sport of BMX in New York State. According to a letter to Ortiz from the New York State BMX Hall of Fame organizing committee, Ortiz “helped shape the history and growth of BMX racing and freestyle for all future generations.”

The letter went on to say, “As a member of this historic class, your legacy will be recognized as part of the foundation of BMX.”

The induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 7 in Albany, New York.

“This induction is a massive honor because you are elected by a group of people you do not even know,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz said he was elected because of his history with freestyle street riding and for owning a skatepark in New York City — Mullaly BMX Bike Park. Ortiz has only been competing himself in BMX racing for five years, he said, “so I still consider myself a rookie in the racing world.”
