Jennie Mae Brewster Vandiver was born in Welch, West Virginia. She was baptized at Welch Presbyterian Church, and grew up in the mountain towns of Welch, Logan, Beckley and Summersville.
Jennie attended Mary Washington College and received her diploma from West Virginia University in teaching. She taught 9th grade Civics and later became a media specialist in elementary education.
Her 6 children Carol, June, Rob, Cindy, Sam and Andrew were all born into a military family--Jennie’s husband Robert was a B-17 pilot in World War II and served 30 years, retiring as an Air Force Colonel. Robert and Jennie said goodbye to military life in Washington D.C. and moved to Ormond Beach in 1971. Jennie’s sister-in-law Sheila Vandiver Briley lived in Ormond since the 1940s and welcomed her brother and Jennie by selling them her house on John Anderson Drive.
Jennie was a member of the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, Christ United, ERAU Wives Club, a local bridge club that played for 50 years, and Oceanside. From the late 1970s until the 1990s, she worked as librarian at Longstreet Elementary and later Pine Trail Elementary. She and Robert later retired to the North 40 subdivision at Granada and Clyde Morris. In her last four years, Jennie Mae resided in assisted living in Tallahassee and passed away in her sleep at the age of 93.
She joins her mother Maureen Davies Brewster, father C.D. Brewster, husband Robert, sisters in law Kathleen, Sheila, Sarah, daughter Carol, aunts, uncles, and other beloved family and friends. Jennie’s six children provided her with 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
A memorial service for Jennie will be held at Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 11 a.m.
