The Flagler Palm Coast Kiwanis Club handed out hundreds of books to incoming fourth graders on July 9 for its annual "Library of My Own" program.

Students in Flagler Schools’ Summer Reading Camp, which is at Wadsworth Elementary School this year, got to select seven books each to keep in their home library.

The Kiwanis handed out books to 87 incoming fourth graders. The club donated $2,700 to purchase the books, club member Maria Barbosa said.

Richard Conklin started the program 20 years ago.

“We wanted to help young people to read and give them books to keep forever,” Barbosa said.

Conklin’s wife, Polly Conklin, a former teacher at Bunnell and Wadsworth elementary schools was among the Kiwanis members who stamped and distributed books at this year’s give-away.
