The American Association of University Women Flagler County Branch has announced that five Flagler County seventh graders have been selected to attend the AAUW Tech Trek camp in June.
Karolina Grinde and Isabella Weasley, both students at Buddy Taylor Middle School, will attend the week-long Tech Trek camp at Florida Atlantic University’s campus in Jupiter. Michelle Ervin a student at Indian Trails Middle School and Kendall Miller and Leila Worley, both students at Buddy Taylor, will attend the camp at Stetson University in DeLand.
All of the campers will live on campus and attend hands-on problem solving workshops led by women role models in the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math.
AAUW's curriculum is designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to middle school students at a time when research indicates that girls' participation in these fields statistically drops. The week-long camp often sparks their curiosity and helps place them on a path toward success.
Sixty-three Flagler County middle school girls have been selected to attend AAUW Florida Tech Trek since the program's inception in 2013. The $1,500 cost per camper is covered by the AAUW Flagler County Branch. A $50 registration fee is the only cost to the family.
Donations to help support future Tech Trek scholarships are greatly appreciated. Checks can be mailed to: AAUW Flagler (Tech Trek) P.O. Box 354873, Palm Coast, FL 32135-4873. Online donations may be made through a secure payment portal at: https://flaglercounty-fl.aauw.net.
