Seabreeze High School students are helping to mentor at Beachside Elementary.

On Wednesday, Jan. 3, the high schoolers and elementary students took part in Beachside's first day of SWIM — Sandcrabs Working in Mentoring.

SWIM also stands for Beachside's school-wide expectations: Show respect to all, Work cooperatively, Implement safe choies, and Model responsibility daily.

"Beachside has experienced a number of changes over the last few years," Beachside Elementary Principal Leigh Prokop said in an email to the Observer. "This includes merging two schools, moving to a new campus, and adding over 100 new students due to rezoning. As we moved through the first semester we noticed that we had some students who needed support in meeting our schoolwide expectations, known as SWIM. ... It's so important to work proactively in ensuring that we are not just putting expectations in place but instead supporting our students academically, socially, and emotionally to meet their potential."

Prokop reached out to Seabreeze High School Principal Tucker Harris to see if he would be willing to partner for a mentoring program. Harris agreed and put together a team of student leaders.

Prokop said she is hopeful the program will have a positive impact on both the high school and elementary students, and that the students loved the experience on their first day.
