Pending School Board approval, Cari McGee will be the new principal at Bunnell Elementary School.

Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore announced the appointment on Dec. 18. The School Board approved the appointment with other personnel items at its Dec. 19 business meeting.

“Cari McGee knows the children, families, teachers and staff at Bunnell Elementary,” Superintendent LaShakia Moore said in a Dec. 18 press release. “When I asked the stakeholders at BES what they want in their next leader, they said they wanted a person who would listen and be active in our community. I’m confident Ms. McGee is that person.”

McGee has been an assistant principal at Bunnell Elementary since July 2019. Before that, she served as a school counselor for over a decade.

BES had been without a permanent principal since Donnelle Evensen resigned in September. Evensen and a teacher had been placed on administrative leave while the school district investigated two assemblies that were held exclusively for African American students on Aug. 18. The teacher who organized the assemblies also resigned.

McGee was introduced as the new principal to the school's faculty and staff on Dec. 18. Moore introduced her at the Dec. 19 board meeting.

“I did just want to take a brief moment to thank Superintendent Moore and her cabinet, the board and the interviewing committee for providing me this opportunity,” she said. “I do not take this charge lightly and will serve the school and community with great care and respect. ... I want you to know that we have a slam dunk faculty and staff, a group of 150 folks that I have come to know and love over the last four and a half years. They make magic every day and are counting on the continued support of the district and board.”

McGee graduated from Western Michigan University in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Social Psychology. She earned a master's in Counseling Education from Michigan State University in 2006 and another master's in Educational Leadership from American College of Education in 2018.

McGee is currently working toward her doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of North Florida.
