Hook, line and sinker

12:16 p.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach

Grand theft. Police responded to a local supermarket after receiving a call about a shoplifting incident in progress. Once the reporting officer arrived on the scene, he met with the store's loss prevention officer, who said he'd observed a 37-year-old man as he walked throughout the store and concealed multiple items such as sunglasses and bags in a backpack.

According to the man's arrest report, he also grabbed several fishing poles, which he carried through the store too. He then exited the store without paying for any of the items, valued at over $1,100, and was apprehended in the parking lot by police officers.

Police also found three syringes, used for drugs, in the man's backpack. He was taken to jail.

Illegal couponer

3:28 p.m. — 100 block of North Nova Road, Ormond Beach

Fraud. A gas station convenience store manager called police after a man stole several packs of cigarettes using fraudulent coupons.

According to an incident report, the man asked for 10 packs of cigarettes and when it came to pay for them, he informed the employee that he had an app with coupons. The employee scanned the barcode off his phone and the man didn't have to pay anything for the cigarettes. He then left, but came back in and asked for another 10 packs of cigarettes, instructing the employee that each one had to be scanned individually for his app coupons to work. The employee did as he asked.

The man also asked for two $10 scratch-off lottery tickets and used a coupon for them too. He won $30 and cashed out. The manager told police that she "knew something was up" when the suspect entered the store a second time and that she took a photo of the car he rode in. She went back into the store and told the man she knew the coupons were fake and that he had to pay for the items he'd already taken.

The report states that the man became very defensive and left without paying for any of the items.

Repeat offender

7:29 p.m. — Intersection of North Nova Road and North Old Kings Road

DUI. Police observed a vehicle traveling northbound on S. Nova Road at an extremely high rate of speed, appearing to have run a red light at Hand Avenue. The officer couldn't be sure though, due to his distance from the vehicle.

The reporting officer began to close in on the vehicle, but as he traveled 90 mph on S. Nova Road — double the speed limit — the driver of the vehicle drove faster.  The officer then witnessed him, without a doubt this time, run a red light at Village Drive.

A traffic stop was then initiated, and the officer approached the driver from the passenger side; the driver, a 54-year-old Ormond Beach man, did not notice until the officer made his presence known. He apologized for driving over the speed limit and said that he was angry and trying to get home. However, the officer noticed the smell of alcohol coming from his person and eventually asked the man to complete a series of field sobriety exercises.

The man agreed. He failed the exercises and was placed under arrest. When later asked at the police station to provide a breath sample, the man replied, "I would rather die," according to his arrest report.

He changed his mind about 90 minutes later. The breath samples still showed a high blood alcohol content level.

The man had three prior DUI charges dating back to 1990, as well as two convictions.

He was taken to jail.
