UPDATE: Police report individuals involved in KFC crash incident were 'people of interest' in Lake County double homicide

OBPD reports death of driver, arrest of male passenger that fled into the nearby Dollar Tree to hide.

Ormond Beach Police have released the identities of the two individuals involved in an incident that resulted in the woman's death and the man's arrest on Friday, Aug. 26 in the parking lot of the KFC at 294 W. Granada Boulevard. Police report the pair were considered people of interest in a double homicide that occurred the day before in Lake County.

OBPD reported that at around 9:54 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 26,  officers responded to the 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard in reference to a report of a vehicle with a bullet hole. Police identified a possible suspect vehicle and issued a Be on the Lookout alert. According to a press release, the suspect vehicle was located at approximately 11:42 a.m. and officers conducted a traffic stop.

Prior to the officer contacting the vehicle's occupants, the vehicle fled, crashing in the KFC parking lot shortly afterward. The driver, 29-year-old Samantha Butler, of Alabama, died during the incident, but police report they do not believe her death isa result of injuries sustained in the crash. She was found unresponsive at the scene, and declared dead at 12:30 p.m.

The vehicle's passenger was identified as Roger Gilbert, 35, of Alabama. He was arrested after he fled from the vehicle and tried to hide in the nearby Dollar Tree. 

According to his arrest report, Gilbert was previously convicted of a felony in Alabama in 2009. At the time of his arrest, he was found to be in possession of a stolen firearm from Alabama. He was charged with possession of a weapon by a felon from another state, grand theft of a firearm, and resisting an officer without violence.
