Joe Golan, founder of the Bike Men of Flagler County, never turns anybody down who needs help. Now the Bike Men need help.

The nonprofit repairs and gives away 2,500 bicycles a year. They work with 35 different organizations in four counties. But they are looking for a new location that contains about 2,000 square feet of working space.

Currently, the Bike Men are in the Atlantis Business Plaza, 2323 N. State St., Unit 100, in Bunnell. They need to be out by the end of the year, Golan said.

“We’ve looked at a number of locations. Some are too small, some are out of our price range,” he said. “We have limited funds in terms of rent. We can cover utilities.”

They are currently paying $450 a month, which covers garbage pickup and maintenance, Golan said.

The Bike Men work in the shop three mornings a week. They work inside, but they need to move bicycles outside to free up space. They also have a portable shop that they operate two days a week.

They keep two trailers at the business plaza and management has indicated it does not want the trailers there, Golan said. They are currently renting a unit. The owners of the unit run Our Father’s Table at Palm Coast United Methodist Church.

“They’ve been very generous,” Golan said. “They’ve allowed us to grow as big as we have. Now we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

Parts and supplies are the Bike Men’s biggest expenses at  about $25,000 to $30,000 a year, Golan said. The last time they moved, which was from a different unit in the same plaza, it cost them about $20,000 to build out the shop, Golan said. Their current budget for utilities, water, electricity and communications is about $10,000 a year, he said.

The Bike Men of Flagler County provide bicycles for children in low-income families and adults who do not have a license and need transportation to get to their jobs. The Bike Men work with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, parole departments and health care facilities. They also provide 200 bikes a year for Christmas Come True.

“We don’t buy bikes unless it’s a very, very special need,” Golan said. “We rely on donations that come in. We get them in daily. It’s a continual operation.”
