Hope House, an initiative of Food Brings Hope that provides unaccompanied youth enrolled in Volusia County Schools a safe living environment, recently received an outdoor makeover, courtesy of the women's basketball team at Daytona State College.
According to a press release, 14 of the team's members, along with Head Coach Tron Griffon and Assistant Coach Sherranda Reddick, cleaned up and enhanced the landscaping and backyard deck area of Hope House. The athletes and their coaches "worked through the heat for hours and turned the exterior of Hope House into a sanctuary for residents," the press release reads.
The team also assembled bags of school supplies to be used for a future school supply drive. Hope House's mission is to ensure the minors residing within its walls graduate from high school, find success in their personal lives and become productive members of society.
Thin Line Coalition, a nonprofit that helps veterans and first responders, will be hosting a Generation of Heroes Poker Chip Run and Patriotic Ride on Saturday, Nov. 6,.
Decorate your vehicle with flags, banners and signs to honor local heroes. The event features three stops and a pasta dinner, all included in the ticket price of $20 for one rider, $30 for a rider and a passenger and $30 for a car or truck. All proceeds will help homeless and combat-inflicted veterans.

Helping Hands Thru Arts recently donated $2,000 to the Holly Hill School and the United Brethren in Christ Academy during a Holly Hill City Commission meeting.
The money was raised during the organization's third-annual Holly Hill Arts Festival, held in Sunrise Park. Each school was presented with a $1,000 check by HHTA Partners Pat Masotti-Abernathy and Dr. Pam Fieldus. The funds will go toward the schools' music programs, the purchase of instruments and the advancement of the arts.
“Our goal in presenting the festival was to use our combined talents to enhance awareness of the arts in Holly Hill while providing a quality fund-raising effort that would improve children’s lives," Masotti-Abernathy said.
On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Rotary Club of Daytona Beach West was well-represented for the International Coastal Cleanup Day event at the Loop cleanup location in Ormond Beach.
Fifteen Rotarians and friends of the club came together for the cleanup effort, which was followed by a breakfast gathering. mong the trash collected by the group were 57 cigarette butts, 47 beverage cans, 30 plastic bags, 18 plastic beverage bottles and 18 glass beverage bottles.
