The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Rob Ridder Scholarship was recently awarded to six local seniors.
The $1,000 scholarship is intended to recognize students of Chamber members for outstanding educational and community service achievement, according to the application. The recipients are:
The Community Foundation, a division of United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties, has selected Chris Via as the 2021 recipient of its Young Leader Award, a press release recently announced.
Via was first elected to the Holly Hill City Commission in 2016 and later, at 28 years old, as mayor in 2018. He was re-elected without opposition in 2020.
Since being in office, Via has been engaged in initiatives related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida Health Care Plans' expansion to the former SunbTrust building, conversion of Holly Hill Park to a national pickleball complex, major infrastructure improvements and more, the press release details.
Via will receive the award during the organization's annual banquet on Oct. 29, at which time the foundation will also present its Herbert M. Davidson Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Service to Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, posthumously, and Joe Petrock.
Funds raised from the event will go toward the foundation's EDGE fund, which is dedicated to offsetting the campaign administrative cost of United Way. For sponsorship opportunities and reservations, call 275-1940.
The Rotary Club of Daytona Beach West recently had a member volunteer with Give Kids the World, nonprofit resort village in Kissimmee that provides free vacations to families with terminally-ill children.
The club's President-Elect Katie Widdison and her mother Anne lent their time in the village's kitchen, and as part of the club's February Service project, the members donated board games and DVDs to Give Kids the World. The club also donated $200 to help the village reopen after the pandemic.
Ormond Beach artist Hailey Nolin will debut a new collection of four abstract paintings during the Ormond Memorial Art Museum's pop-up exhibit at 9 W. Granada Blvd., which opens June 1.
“When I started thinking about this collection and the direction I wanted it to go, I wanted to embody the different shades of our Florida waterways while focusing on conservation and beauty," said Nolin in OMAM's June
newsletter. "Considering both of those topics, I decided to create these pieces using only water and diluted acrylic paints and mica powders in layers. Each piece barely has any medium on it since so much water has been added, and that’s the whole point. These paintings embody the thought that beauty can come from even something very little while using resources conservatively.”
Nolin's goal is to "bring the community together through art and show appreciation for our beautiful waterways." The exhibition will run through June 28.
On Wednesday, May 26, locals who were up early that morning got a look at a partial eclipse. One resident submitted his photo to the Observer of his view of the moon from the Granada bridge.
