The Ormond Beach Police Department celebrated Lt. James Doggett's retirement during a ceremony on Thursday, March 18.
He was with the Police Department for 25-and-a-half years, having started in June 1995. Doggett also received a check from the Ormond Beach Police
Foundation to thank him for his years of service.
Adjudicated artwork from Volusia County Schools students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be showcased at the 49th-annual Volusia Students Create Exhibition, according to a press release.
The show will open at the Gateway Center for the Arts, located at 880 N. U.S. 17-92 in DeBary, with an official opening to be held 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 28. The exhibition will feature artwork created by 130 students from 55 schools. Showcasing the top artwork from elementary, middle and high school, the exhibition serves to document the progress student artists have made during the school year, the press release reads.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, school-based shows and most community art festivals were canceled. Student art instruction was also impacted.
“We had to emerge from last spring and reset with new expectations, but we’ve adjusted and we feel optimistic,” said Bryce Hammond, VCS Visual Arts Specialist. “Our community art partners have been amazing to support our students and teachers in so many ways as we’ve all navigated this challenging year.”
There will be no formal ceremony, but ribbons will be placed on winning pieces.
The Ormond Beach Lions Club has named Trevor Presswood as its student-athlete of the month for March.
Presswood is a Seabreeze High School senior baseball player. He has a 3.8 GPA, according to an announcement by the Lions Club, and is an Oasis student who helps at his church. Presswood also participates in community clean ups.
He is also a recipient of the Bright Futures scholarship and plans to attend Daytona State College in the fall, where he will form part of the school's baseball team.
Food Brings Hope recently recognized the Stellar Foundation as its February Business of the Month.
According to a press release, the Stellar Foundation has been a strong supporter of FBH for many years. The Foundation partnered with the nonprofit to provide freezers for schools receiving frozen meat for the Feed-A-Family food bags program. FBH has also been a recipient of "tens of thousands of dollars" from the Foundation.
Additionally, the Foundation produces a holiday card highlighting its philanthropic work each Christmas, in which FBH students and activities have been included several times in the past. The Foundation was founded in 2006, and its mission is to "build communities, developing an environment that supports stronger families and promotes a cycle of giving that stretches from their backyard in Jacksonville to communities around the world," the press release reads.
"All of us at Stellar are honored to have partnered with Food Brings Hope for the past four years, and we're proud to be recognized as their Business of the Month," said Michael Santarone, Stellar Foundation chief executive officer, in the press release. "Food Brings Hope is an incredibly important organization that provides Florida families in need with essential food and other resources. We look forward to continuing to support this vital initiative."
Ormond Beach author Sarah Beliza Tucker has published a new book in her series, "The Adventures of Harry and Friends."
