2:48 p.m. — 1600 block of North U.S. 1
Narcotics offense. Police arrested a 33-year-old Tennessee man who was driving recklessly in town. A witness reported he was failing to maintain a lane and driving into the median, where he almost struck several vehicles.
The man pulled into a local gas station where police were able to make contact with him. The reporting officer noted that the man appeared to be asleep behind the wheel while the vehicle was still running. Police were able to carefully place the vehicle in park and turn it off, during which the man woke up and police discovered a loaded syringe in his lap.
According to the police report, there was a plastic baggie off heroin in the center console.
The man was taken to jail.
12:05 a.m. — 1600 block of North U.S. 1
Battery. A 51-year-old transient man was arrested at a local motel after he attacked other guests, during which he grabbed his room's fire extinguisher and used it to spray numerous people and vehicles in the area.
According to his arrest report, the man was one of three individuals whom witnesses described attacked a single guest. The other two suspects led the scene in a white truck, running over one victim's foot in the process. A second victim told police that the man called him racial slurs before the fight began.
Police were able to apprehend the man in his hotel room, where they noted he appeared both intoxicated and belligerent.
He was taken to jail.
1:32 a.m. — First block of South Beach Street
Resisting an officer without violence. A 23-year-old transient woman attempted to elude police by swimming in the Halifax River, a watery move that didn't make much of a difference; she ended up getting arrested anyway.
The reporting officer first spotted two women standing by a vehicle in the parking lot of a local park. Due to the hour, the officer approached them to inform them the park was currently closed, but they were uncooperative. The friend eventually provided the officer with her driver's license out of Georgia, but the woman refused to give any information. Because she looked young, the officer began to suspect she could be a runaway teen.
The officer contacted his superior for guidance, and as he was speaking with him over the phone, the woman began to walk away from the car. She was instructed to stop, but refused to listen.
Shortly after her swim in the river, she was placed in handcuffs, and then provided her name to police. She had open felony warrant from Georgia due to drug charges. She was taken to jail.
