After meeting only online for the duration of the COVID-19 lockdown period, Civil Air Patrol's Ormond Beach Composite Squadron is off to a running start, according to a press release.
The squadron has resumed senior member and cadet programs in person, is putting together a hot air balloon program, and restarting cadet orientation flights, where cadets are introduced to the many aspects of flying.
In the past, the press release states CAP has been involved in and has supported military training exercises. Its squadron's cadet color guard has competed across the country in state, regional and national competition. Many of the squadron's cadets and senior members recently returned from Summer Encampment, a weeklong event that pushes cadets to improve and overcome obstacles.
Next month, five cadets will represent the Ormond Beach Composite Squadron at the Cyber Academy. a highly-selective program geared toward learning about technology and cyber security.
Visitors are encouraged to come to the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport and see how CAP makes a difference in the community. The squadron meets weekly every Monday evening.

Daytona State College recently announced the creation of the "Falcon Fast Track" scholarship program to provide support for Volusia and Flagler counties' 2020 and 2021 high school graduates.
According to a press release, eligible students who enroll at DSC full-time, which is defined as 12 or more credit hours, will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Those enrolling in six to 11 credit hours will be awarded a $750 scholarship.
“The ‘Falcon Fast Track’ program is designed to assist first-time in college students who are right out of high school begin their educational journey now,” said Heidi Pinney, DSC Director of Financial Aid in the press release. “The past year has not been an easy one for these students and we want to help remove financial barriers in an effort to create a smooth pathway to achieve their educational goals. These students belong here."

The NASCAR Foundation and Daytona International Speedway will team up to host the first License to Drive event on Wednesday, July 21.
The event will allow fans in their personal vehicles to experience the world-renowned venue through the same lens as the best drivers in the world: both on the track and behind the wheel, a press release explains. For $50 per vehicle, participants will be able to drive two laps at 55 mph around the 2.5-mile World Center of Racing, led by a Daytona International Speedway Safety/Pace vehicle.
“This event is a fantastic opportunity for fans to get a taste of NASCAR racing at a track that holds so much significance to the sport,” said Nichole Krieger, The NASCAR Foundation executive director, in the press release. “Most importantly, through this unforgettable track experience, participants will be positively impacting the life of a child in need.”
Participants behind the wheel must have a valid driver's license and each vehicle must be equipped with enough seatbelts for all passengers. No motorcycles, RVs or tractor railers will be allowed.

After over a year of being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council on Aging's dining sites — located in Deltona, DeLand, Holly Hill, New Smyrna Beach, Orange City, Ormond Beach and Port Orange — have been reopened.
The dining sites are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. COA announced that coffee, tea and water are provided in addition to nutritious lunches and opportunities to socialize and engage in activities. Donations are accepted for lunch.
