Two large dogs that escaped from their owner's property in the Daytona North area entered a neighbor's yard and killed a small dog Feb. 14, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office report.
"The two pit bull dogs were called back to their residence by the owner after hearing the neighbor's screams," a deputy wrote in an incident report.
The dog that was killed was at the home of an 88-year-old woman who was dog-sitting it for her hospitalized neighbor when the attack occurred.
The dog-sitter said she'd been watching the small dog, a terrier, when two dogs from a home at 1050 Avocado Boulevard came onto her lawn.
"Once on the property, the dogs began to bite and maul the dog she had been caring after to the point where the dog was killed due to the attack," a deputy wrote in an incident report. "[She] attempted to intervene, but lost her footing and was not injured by either of the aggressive dogs. The two pit bull dogs were called back to their residence by the owner after hearing the neighbor's screams."
The large dogs' owner, 51-year-old Charles Johnson, told a deputy that he'd been asleep during the attack, and that the dogs had escaped after his girlfriend, Ame Everett, had not properly closed the home's front door.
The son of the hospitalized woman that owns the small dog responded to the scene to speak with deputies and Animal Control.
The two large dogs are under a 10-day quarantine while an Animal Control officer investigates.
Animal Control does not have records of previous cases of aggression involving the two large dogs.
