The Ormond Memorial Art Museum's new art exhibit will feature the talents of veterans and members of military families, and will be on display when the museum reopens on June 8.
The "Veterans and Military Families Create" exhibit includes creations in different mediums and subject matters. According to the museums latest newsletter, each piece is accompanied by a story of someone's connection to the military. One of them is "The Kiss," a watercolor painting by Lisa Argentieri, who is the niece of a Vietnam War veteran.
"I remember as a young girl, my grandparents' joy in celebrating my uncle John returning home from war," she said in the newsletter. "I was given the task of putting a small paper American flag in each corner of the patriotic cake my Grandma had baked. Although I was too young to comprehend war, I knew that his coming home safely was something special.
OMAM's mission, having been founded in 1946 with a donation of oil paintings by artists and World War I veteran Malcom Fraser, is to inspire its community with "art and nature while honoring those who defend our freedom," the newsletter states.
In light of COVID-19, the museum will only be open from noon to 4 p.m. every day and will be limited to 10 visitors at a time. Masks are required for visitors and staff, and social distancing will be in effect.
The exhibition will be on display through September and its presenting sponsors are Nancy and Lowell Lohman and Cindy Jenkins Graphic Design.
Superwash Express will be offering five $500 college scholarships, each from one of the company's five locations, according to a press release.
“Our hearts go out to the seniors that have to celebrate this important milestone untraditionally this year,” said Paul Bradley, owner of Superwash Express. “We were moved to give and hope each scholarship makes a positive difference in each student’s college journey,” Paul added.
Students must live in Ormond Beach, Palm Coast, Port Orange, Daytona Beach or Mount Dora. They must be graduating from high school this year and are required to like Superwash Express on Facebook or follow Superwash Express on Instagram. Students must also post their senior picture or a photo of a memorable moment from high school, as well as a short bio of their accomplishments and future plans, and tag Superwash's page. Chip Ganassi Racing sported a special tribute paint scheme to thank AdventHealth's team members for being on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic during the recent Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.
The hood of Ross Chasain's No. 77 AdventHealth Chevy featured a thank you message and its trunk carried the name of all the AdventHealth facilities, including the ones in Volusia and Flagler County, according to an email by AdventHealth spokesperson Lindsay Cashio.
Florida Power and Light is continuing to upgrade its systems in Ormond Beach by strengthening the energy grid and improve reliability.
Some of the company investments include strengthening power lines and poles, trimming trees near power lines and installing smart grid technology, according to a press release. This should aid speed restoration efforts after a major storm, FPL stated.
"We continue to build one of the nation’s strongest, smartest and most storm-resilient energy grids using advanced smart grid technology to continue delivering reliable electricity that our customers can count on," said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. "Last year, FPL customers experienced record-setting electric service reliability, in part due to smart devices, and we will continue to use emerging technology to find innovative ways to deliver cleaner energy while keeping costs 30% below the national average."
Planned improvements for this year include 256 automated switches on main and neighborhood power lines, and inspecting and clearing tree branches and vegetation from 143 miles of power lines. Once all the work is completed, FPL will have strengthened 16 main power lines, reviewed 1,871 miles of power lines and inspected all 12,115 power poles every eight years — all since the 2004-2005 hurricane season.
Tomoka United Methodist Church, located at 1000 Old Tomoka Road, is accepting donations of food, diapers, toilet paper and coloring books for children, to go to Family Renew Community, every Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon.
The biggest needs are for non-perishable food, basic hygiene items such as shampoo and soap, and things for children. No clothing items are currently being accepted. Call 615-0800 for more information.
