Chabad of Greater Daytona and Esformes Hebrew Academy didn't want to miss the chance to salute the mothers of Ormond Beach, seeing as many of them "are working harder than ever," a press release stated.
Chabad teamed up with Simply Roses to be able to bring a treat to community member's doors via the "Mitzvah Tank," dubbed the Mom Mobile. The tank rolled through Volusia County this Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, playing music and distributing flowers throughout the town to every mom they saw, not just congregant members.
"The Ormond Beach neighborhoods greeted the 'mom mobile' with great excitement," the press release stated. "Not only did moms and grandmas get excited, but the children loved it too! Even dads got in on the excitement and took flowers to return to their wives and mothers."
Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, St. Brendan Catholic School's eight graders have been visiting with residents at Seaside Manor as part of their intergenerational service project.
COVID-19 has put a stop to their in-person visits, but in early May, the students walked by the nursing home and held up signs, carried balloons, waved and cheered for their friends inside, according to an email by Dawn Melcher, eastern region director of marketing for the Diocese of Orlando's office of Catholic schools. The residents were able to watch the students from their windows, wave and smile back.
"St. Brendan students love their friends at Seaside Manor, have learned much from them, while showing compassionate service to others," Melcher wrote. "They have made a big difference in the lives of the residents by being present with the resident and sharing of themselves."
This past year, the students have celebrated Christmas together with the residents, decorated their walkers and wheelchairs for Mardi Gras, and interviewed them about their memories of growing up in the 40s and 50s.
In the time of COVID-19, members of the Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club are remaining active by conducting meetings through Zoom and lending a hand to the community.
The club has donated $400 to St. Brendan's Catholic Church Outreach, $150 to Halifax Urban Ministries and $150 to the Jerry Doliner Food Bank, according to a press release. Members have also handwritten over 200 cards, which were
delivered to residents at Seaside Manor Assisted Living, the Opis Coquina Center and the Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans Nursing Home in Daytona Beach.
In addition, members have prepared and delivered over 100 spaghetti lunches to local businesses, offices, stores and shops in the Ormond-by-the-Sea community, according to the press release.
Regarding its Al Weeks, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, the application deadline was extended to July 1. The $1,000 scholarship is available to any graduating senior living in Ormond Beach or Ormond-by-the-Sea. Call 441-4421.
An Ormond-by-the-Sea resident is onboard the U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge which is operating in the Indo-Pacific region and is postured to support the Navy's response to the COVID-19 outbreak on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier in port in Guam, according to a press release.
Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Jose L. Alonso is a 2003 Seabreeze High School alumnus, and currently serves as the 7th Fleet medical senior enlisted leader and Fleet independent-duty corpsman.
“My office has been on the front lines in preventing infection and responding to COVID-19 incidents in the Navy's most dynamic Fleet,” said Alonso, according to the press release. “Our office set initial force health protection policies and guidance to best posture the Fleet’s 27,000 Sailors against COVID-19; setting the standard across the Navy. Furthermore, we set the framework for and coordinated the response to support the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) by brining increased medical capabilities and capacity to the island of Guam.”
Sailors like Alonso are working daily to provide command and control to the fleet, which then supports security and peace in the Indo-Pacific, the press release states. U.S. 7th Fleet provides security alongside allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific and as the Navy's largest forward-deployed fleet, 7th Fleet operates about 50-70 ships and submarines, as well as 140 aircraft with an estimated 20,000 Sailors.
The Tillandsia Garden Club of Ormond Beach was recently awarded the 2019 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Community Service Award for its "Santas, Succulents and Seniors" project, according to an announcement.
The multi-month project supported the residents at Seaside Health and Rehabilitation Center in Daytona Beach, and was coordinated by Club President Jill Stephens and Project Chair Patty Teeters.
The club's 40 members committed their time and energies into providing the 139 residents with a holiday celebration. According to the announcement, each resident received clothing, sweet treats and toiletries in brightly-colored tote bags. The culminating activity, the announcement states, consisted of the club hosting a holiday party providing refreshments, photos with Santa, a sing-along and the distribution of the tote bags.
